Unruly Teenage Boy in California Jail Grows Breasts After Being Forced to Take Estrogen

The family of a California teenager is suing an alleged “doctor” after the boy was forced to take estrogen pills while in jail, which caused him to develop female-like breasts, according to the New York Post.

The teenager, who had been sentenced to Eastlake Juvenile Hall, was prescribed with the hormone pills just two days after his incarceration began in June of 2019, ostensibly to treat his Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or ODD. Two weeks later, he developed gynecomastia, a condition often seen in men with unusually high estrogen levels, which led to his breasts swelling, among other painful side effects. He was taken off the pills in the following month, but the damage had already been done.

After the teenager was released in April of this year, his family filed a lawsuit against the doctor who prescribed and forced him to take the pill, Danny Wang, after Wang did so without the parents’ knowledge or consent. The lawsuit describes the forced treatment as “experimental,” and the family’s lawyer, Wesley Ouchi, confirmed that the boy will need surgery to reverse the harmful effects of the drug.

Numerous health experts have confirmed that estrogen is not and has never been considered a treatment for ODD. One such expert, clinical psychiatry professor James McGough of UCLA, said that “you won’t find a reference anywhere that supports the use of estrogen for [treating] ODD.”
