Santa Ana Jail Escapee Convicted in Breakout and Kidnapping of Cab Driver

SANTA ANA—The first of three Orange County Jail inmates to be tried for a brazen January 2016 breakout was convicted April 8 of kidnapping, a day after he was convicted of the escape, and faces a maximum of nearly nine years in state prison. Bac Tien Duong, 48, was acquitted April 7 of felony kidnapping for robbery, but found guilty on April 8 of the lesser charge of simple kidnapping. A mistrial was declared on a felony count of unlawful taking of a vehicle when jurors split 6-6 on that charge. Attorneys will discuss whether to dismiss it when Duong is sentenced May 14. Co-defendants Hossein Nayeri, 42, and Jonathan Tieu, 25, are awaiting trial. Duong’s attorney, Abby Taylor of the Orange County Public Defender’s office, argued her client was under duress from threats by Nayeri and should not be convicted of anything other than escaping.
